Impact across multiple dimensions

Scientific impact is a core part of FAIR’s contribution. At the same time, the program aims to generate value for researchers, companies, governments and society. FAIR therefore considers impact across multiple dimensions, from scientific excellence and knowledge creation to economic, international and societal impact.

Scientific Impact

FAIR contributes to the international advancement of artificial intelligence through publications, conferences, doctoral research, software, datasets and new scientific methodologies. The program brings together researchers across disciplines, enabling collaboration on complex AI challenges that would be difficult to address in isolation.

Examples of scientific impact include:

  • publications and scientific citations;

  • PhD theses and researcher development;

  • reusable software, toolboxes and datasets;

  • new methods and algorithms;

  • international scientific collaborations.

Economic & Ecosystem Impact

FAIR strengthens the Flemish innovation ecosystem by connecting researchers with companies, public organizations and innovation intermediaries. Research results contribute to new projects, collaborations, funding opportunities and knowledge transfer activities that support innovation and competitiveness.

Examples include:

  • enrichment projects;

  • publicly funded innovation projects;

  • industry collaborations;

  • knowledge dissemination activities;

  • AI adoption initiatives.

International Impact

FAIR contributes to the international visibility of Flemish AI research through participation in European projects, international networks, scientific collaborations and global research communities. This strengthens Flanders' position within the wider European AI landscape and helps attract new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Examples include:

  • participation in European programs;

  • international research partnerships;

  • contributions to European AI initiatives;

  • participation in international conferences and expert networks.

Societal Impact

FAIR develops AI technologies that address challenges in health, industry, society, and planet & energy. Through its use cases and collaborations, the program seeks to ensure that AI contributes to better decisions, more sustainable systems, improved services and greater societal well-being.

Examples include:

  • healthcare applications;

  • environmental and energy innovations;

  • responsible and trustworthy AI;

  • decision-support systems for public and societal challenges;

  • human-centered AI technologies.

From Research to Adoption

Impact is not only measured by what FAIR creates, but also by how research results are used. Through funding opportunities, enrichment projects, industry collaborations and entrepreneurial initiatives, FAIR actively supports the translation of research into real-world applications and long-term value creation.
